在日常英語中常用的體育和運動口頭禪

觀賞職業球賽或者其電視轉播成為現代人生活的一部份，因此許多在體育或球類運動裡常用的術語，很自然的滲透到應與日常英語中，成為大家的口頭禪。對於沒有實際在西方社會長期生活的東方人而言，聽到這樣的術語會一頭霧水，不知道其本意與出處。

本文介紹在日常英語中常被用到的一些運動與球類比賽詞彙，讓大家體會體育比賽在西方社會，尤其是美國社會中對日常英語的影響。

常用在英語中的棒球術語

當命運對你投出變幻莫測的曲球，儘管揮棒打擊。

• Hit a Home Run: 打了一支全壘打。
  做了一件非常難得與成功的事情。例句：We felt  our  band  hit a home  run  that  night – it was  the  best  performance we ever  gave.
  
  

• A Ball Park Figure: 棒球場數字
  就是當天到場觀賽的觀眾人數。因為開賽時到場觀眾人數並不能精確掌握，只能猜個大概，因此 Ballpark  Figure 就變成「大概的數量」了。例句：Jeff, could you predict the next month sales volume of shoes, I only need a ballpark figure.
  
  

• Bat a Thousand: 打擊率百分之百

  棒球選手的打擊率計算到小數點後三位，棒球選手在一場比賽中，每次擊球都獲得安打上壘，打擊率就是1.000，被改稱為1,000。引申為做了一件難得又了不起的事情。例句：John is able to bat a thousand at last campus spelling contest.
  
  

• Throw a Curve Ball: 投了一個曲球。

  打擊手很難判斷投手投出的曲球最後到達打擊區的位置而揮棒落空，引申為做了一件突如其來、難以預測又棘手的事情。Marry throws her boss a curve ball to quit at the peak season of business.
  
  

• Touch Base:踏觸壘板
  指打擊上壘的跑壘者，雖然可以雙腳離開壘板伺機盜壘，但必須要經常注意踏回壘板才不致被投手刺殺在壘上。引伸為讓周圍的人，及時獲得必要的訊息。例句：I need to touch base with Grace to learn the latest customer reactions.
  
  

• Nice Guy Finishes Last: 循規蹈矩的球員老是排名在後。
  知名美國職棒內野手與教練Leo Durocher 在1946年批評紐約巨人隊”The nice guys are all over there, in seventh place” （所有聽話的球員都卡在第七名），當時國家聯盟有8支球隊，第七名就是倒數第二名。這句話間接被傳述為” Nice Guys’ Wind Up in Last Place”（乖乖牌球員的下場就是敬陪末座），最後又演變為經典名句”Nice Guy Finishes Last”。在職場上暗喻「不循規蹈矩的人才吃得開」，在男女關係上暗喻「男人不壞女人不愛」。例句：：The polite and well-mannered man who treats women like royalty realizes too late that nice guys finish last.

• Rain Check:遇雨重賽入場券
  棒球賽進行一半遇雨中止，出場時發給觀眾下次比賽的入場券。意指事情因故無法進行而延期。例句：I apologize that you have to take the rain check of the anniversary banquet, because my mom is hospitaized.

人只活一次，每次嘗試都要全力以赴

• Full Court Press:全場緊迫盯人

  這是一種嚴密的藍球防守策略，每一個球員都一對一近身，阻止其接球、傳球或上籃。引身為使竟渾身解數去做一件事情。例句：If the company is going to hit our revenue goals for the quarter, it’s going to require a real full-court press from the sales team.

   

• Slam Dunk: 灌籃
  灌籃是球員躍身上籃，兩手高度超越籃框把球壓近籃框。採用灌籃對手很難把球半路撥開。引申為做了一件十拿九穩的事情。例句：After a successful presentation to board members, John believe to get the agreement signed is a slam dunk.

   

• Give Someone’s Best Shot: 全力命中
  使出渾身解數命中籃框德分。例句：Jenny has given her best shot to win grade A in the final examination.

   

• Take a Shot at Someone or Something: 對準籃框投球

  盡力做好一件事情。例句：No matter how difficult may be, Grace always take a shot at caring patients.

   

• On the Rebound: 籃板反彈球
  籃板反彈球代表投籃未中，但是如果能再亂軍中奪得籃板反彈球，不論攻守何方，就可以展開攻勢。引申為利空出盡，機會再度出現。例句：Wall  Street  is on  the  rebound a day  after  stock  prices  plunged  to  new  lows.

高爾夫球常用的術語

大家經常將不幸的意外歸諸於命運，但對一桿進洞的驚
喜視為自己的功勞。

• Hole in One:一桿進洞
  指做事情一氣呵成、一次到位。例句：Being a novice in propterty businss, John made a hole in one deal in a sale of one million dollar real estate.

• In Full Swing:高揮桿
  從發球區將求用力揮上果嶺，指使盡全力。例句：After initial setbacks, the construction work is now in full swing to catch up the deadline.

• Above Par:低於標準桿
  高爾夫球以最少桿數完成比賽者勝，低於標準桿表現超出平均水準。例句：His performance is always above par when he meets strong compeitors. Below par 意思相反，表現低於平均標準; up to par 表現等於平均標準。

• Tee IT Up:把球放上球座準備揮桿
  Tee是球座的意思。Tee it up 是指開始積極進行一件事情。例句：When Mary and John teed it up for their wedding, serious arguments arise. Tee someone off 是指把某人惹惱了；Be teed up是喝醉了。

• Knock Out:擊倒
  拳擊手將對手擊至昏迷。引申到日常英語意指使失去知覺，用藥物讓人昏迷，予以淘汰或完全擊敗、毀壞之意。

  1)例句：The lady fell down from the ladder and knocked out.

  2)例句：The power system was completey knocked out by the hurriane.

• Hit Below the Belt:拳擊時攻擊對手腰帶以下部位
  攻擊對手腰帶以下部位，引伸為使用不當的手段。例句：Politicians are always hitting their opponents below the belt during campaigning.

• Throw in the Towel:低於標準桿
  拳賽時助理混用毛巾擦拭選手的臉部血跡，現在已經改用海綿。如果拳擊手或其教練將毛巾丟到場中央，就表示認輸不再出場。引申為承認失敗的意思。例句：The presiental candidate Johnson Smith throws in the towel at a press conference after knowing the result of the poll.

• On the Ropes:倚靠在欄繩上
  拳擊手在場中被攻擊無力還手，倚靠在場邊的欄繩上，無法回到場中再戰。意指處於極度劣勢無法獲勝。例句：Nokia was considered on the ropes when it kept underestimated the charm of smart phones to the consumers.

• Down and Out:被擊倒並出場
  拳擊手在場中被擊倒，並於裁判數到十後，仍無法起身應戰被判出局。意指一敗塗地。例句：Steve Jobs was down and out seveal times in his career, but he finally made it when launched iPhones.
